Guide to Dressing for Your Family Photo Session: Coordinating Outfits That Pop

Planning a family photo session can be both exciting and daunting. As a photographer, I've learned that choosing the right outfits is crucial for creating stunning, timeless photos that you'll cherish forever. Here's my guide to dressing for your family photo session and coordinating outfits that pop, while considering what colors would look nice in your home.

1. Consider Your Home Décor
Before you start picking out outfits, take a look around your home. Where do you plan to display your family photos? I always recommend considering the color palette of your living spaces. If your home features neutral tones, you might want to opt for softer colors that blend seamlessly with your décor. On the other hand, if your home is filled with vibrant colors, you can choose outfits that match or complement those hues. The goal is to create a cohesive look that enhances the overall aesthetic of your home.
2. Choose a Color Palette
Once you have an idea of what colors will look nice in your home, choose a color palette for your family’s outfits. A good rule of thumb is to select three to four colors that complement each other. I often suggest incorporating a mix of neutrals (like white, beige, and gray) with a few accent colors (such as navy, burgundy, or mustard for fall or green, blue, or pink for spring). This approach ensures that everyone’s outfits coordinate without being overly matchy-matchy.

3. Mix and Match Textures and Patterns
To add visual interest and depth to your photos, mix and match different textures and patterns within your chosen color palette. Think about incorporating knit sweaters, denim, lace, or velvet. When it comes to patterns, subtle prints like stripes, plaids, or florals can work beautifully as long as they don’t overpower the photo. The key is to balance solids with patterns so that the overall look is harmonious.

4. Coordinate, Don’t Match
While it’s tempting to dress everyone in matching outfits, coordinating rather than matching is more visually appealing. For example, if you choose navy as one of your colors, one family member could wear a navy dress, another a navy shirt, and another could have a navy accessory like a scarf or tie. This way, everyone’s outfits are cohesive but still unique.

5. Dress for Comfort and Confidence
Your family photo session should be a fun and enjoyable experience, so it’s important to choose outfits that everyone feels comfortable and confident in and have a proper fit. Avoid clothing that is too tight or restrictive, or too loose and need constant adjusting and make sure kids can move around easily. When everyone is comfortable, it will show in the photos.

6. Plan for the Weather and Location
Consider the weather and the location of your photo session when choosing outfits. For outdoor sessions, think about the season and dress accordingly. In the fall, layers like cardigans and scarves can add warmth and style. In the summer, lightweight fabrics and breathable materials are key. If your session is in a more formal indoor setting, slightly dressier outfits might be appropriate.
7. Incorporate Personal Touches
Don’t forget to add personal touches to your outfits. Whether it’s a favorite piece of jewelry, a meaningful accessory, or a special heirloom, these little details can make your photos even more special and unique to your family.

8. Plan Ahead and Lay Out Outfits
Once you’ve decided on your outfits, lay them out together to see how they look as a group. This will help you make any last-minute adjustments and ensure that everything coordinates well. Planning ahead also reduces stress on the day of the shoot, allowing you to focus on enjoying the moment with your family.

Choosing the right outfits for your family photo session can make a significant difference in the final result. By considering your home décor, selecting a cohesive color palette, mixing textures and patterns, and ensuring everyone is comfortable, you’ll create beautiful, timeless photos that reflect your family’s unique style and personality.
