Capturing beautiful, candid moments with your children is such a joy, but as any parent knows, getting kids to cooperate for a photo shoot can sometimes be a bit challenging! With a little preparation and the right mindset, your photo session can be a fun and successful experience for everyone involved. Here are some helpful tips to ensure that your kids are ready for their close-up.

1. Choose the Right Time
Timing is everything, especially with little ones. Try to schedule your session at a time when your kids are well-rested and fed. Avoid naptime or meal times, as tired or hungry kids can quickly lead to frustration. A rested child is more likely to be cooperative and energetic, giving us those natural, happy smiles. Another this to keep in mind is timing for sun. The lower the sun is, the easier it is to allow more freedom for little ones to move in and out of the shadows. Lighting is best first thing in the morning or in the evening.
2. Dress Comfortably and Appropriately
Outfits play a big role in how your photos turn out, but it’s equally important that your children are comfortable. Choose clothes that they can move in easily and feel good wearing. Also ensure the clothes fit properly. Having to worry about adjusting outfits constantly adds an extra layer of difficulty in capturing those special moments. Simple, coordinated outfits in neutral or complementary colors often work best. Avoid large logos or busy patterns that can distract from their adorable faces.

3. Bring Snacks and Breaks
Snacks can be a lifesaver during a photo session, especially if your child starts to lose patience. Bring along some easy, non-messy snacks (think golfish or fruit snacks) and plenty of water. Be sure to build in time for short breaks if the session is running long. Little breaks can help them reset and keep things fun!

4. Talk About the Session in Advance
Prepare your children by talking about the photo shoot beforehand. Explain what will happen and how much fun it will be! You can even play "photographer" at home to get them used to the idea of posing. Let them know that there will be moments to smile and moments to play—it’s not all about sitting still!

5. Incorporate Favorite Toys or Comfort Items
If your child has a favorite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal, consider bringing it along. Not only can it help them feel more comfortable, but it can also be a sweet addition to the photos. These items can act as fun props and provide a sense of security during the session.
6. Be Positive and Stay Relaxed
Your energy plays a big role in how your kids will respond. If you stay calm, positive, and relaxed, your children are more likely to feel at ease as well. Try not to stress if things don’t go perfectly—some of the best shots are the spontaneous, unplanned moments that happen when everyone is simply enjoying themselves.

7. Let the Photographer Lead
Trust your photographer to guide the session and work with your children. As professionals, we’ve seen it all and know how to engage with kids to capture their best moments. Sometimes the most magical photos come from letting your kids be themselves—whether they’re exploring, laughing, or being a little silly. Don’t worry too much about perfection; we’re here to capture your family’s unique beauty!

8. Have Fun!
Most importantly, make the experience fun for your kids. A successful photo shoot isn’t about getting every pose just right—it’s about capturing genuine moments of joy and connection. When your children are having fun, their natural personalities will shine through in every photo.
At Elisabeth Ashliegh Photography, I want your family’s session to be relaxed, enjoyable, and memorable. With these tips in mind, you’ll be setting your kids up for success and ensuring that your photo shoot captures the beauty and love of your family.
