The holiday season is a magical time of year, filled with twinkling lights, cozy gatherings, and the joy of giving. One of the best ways to capture these special moments is through a Christmas or holiday-themed photoshoot.

Whether you’re sending out holiday cards or just looking to preserve memories, a festive photoshoot is a great way to celebrate the season.

I love bringing holiday spirit to life through our sessions, especially mini sessions that provide a quick and fun way to get beautiful family photos. To help you prepare, I’ve put together some tips on choosing the perfect wardrobe and how to make the most of your holiday mini session.
1. Coordinate Your Wardrobe
When planning outfits for your holiday photoshoot, think about how your family’s clothing will complement the festive backdrop. The key is to coordinate without being overly "matchy-matchy."

Here are a few ideas to help guide you:

  1. Classic Holiday Colors: You can never go wrong with traditional holiday colors like red, green, gold, or even winter white. These tones pop beautifully against snowy or Christmas-themed backdrops.
  2. Neutral Tones with a Pop of Color: If you prefer a more subtle look, try neutral colors like beige, cream, or gray, then add a pop of holiday color with accessories like scarves, hats, or festive shoes.
  3. Plaid and Cozy Textures: A holiday photoshoot is the perfect time to pull out cozy materials like flannel, wool, or cable knit. Plaid patterns, especially in red and green, evoke the warmth of the season and photograph beautifully.
  4. Layers: Layers not only keep you warm for outdoor shoots, but they also add dimension to your photos. Think cardigans, scarves, or vests.

Pro Tip: Avoid clothing with large logos or busy patterns, as they can be distracting in photos. Instead, choose simple, timeless pieces that let your family’s personalities shine through.
2. Keep It Comfortable
While you want to look festive, comfort is just as important—especially when children are involved. If your little ones are uncomfortable or fidgeting with their outfits, it can be harder to get those natural, happy smiles. Choose outfits that are stylish but allow for movement, and make sure your children feel good in what they’re wearing.

If you’re doing an outdoor shoot in the cold, make sure to bundle up in cute layers that will keep everyone warm without compromising on style. Warm accessories like hats, gloves, and boots can be part of the fun and keep everyone comfortable during the session.
3. Arrive Ready to Have Fun
Mini sessions are fast-paced but fun! These sessions are typically shorter (about 15-20 minutes), so it’s important to arrive on time and ready to go. Since time is limited, plan ahead to ensure everyone is in a great mood before the shoot begins.

Here are a few tips to make the most of your mini session:
  1. Prepare the Kids: Let your children know what to expect beforehand. Frame the session as a fun holiday activity rather than a chore. A little encouragement or a reward for after the session (like hot chocolate or a holiday treat) can go a long way!
  2. Keep It Relaxed: Don’t stress about getting the perfect shot—some of the best photos are the spontaneous ones that capture real joy and interaction between family members. Let kids be themselves, and the magic will naturally unfold.
  3. Bring a Special Item: If your family has a beloved holiday tradition, bring along a prop that highlights it. Whether it’s a favorite ornament, a special family blanket, or even matching stockings, personal touches add meaning to your photos.

4. Consider the Backdrop
Many holiday mini-sessions take place in festive settings, whether it’s a Christmas tree farm, a beautifully decorated studio, or an outdoor winter wonderland. Choose a backdrop that fits your family’s vibe—whether you prefer something whimsical and fun or elegant and classic.

If you’re unsure of what to expect, don’t hesitate to ask your photographer in advance. Knowing what the setting will look like can help you plan your wardrobe and decide if you want to bring any additional props to enhance the photos.

5. Embrace the Spirit of the Season
The holiday season is about joy, warmth, and togetherness. Focus on having fun with your family and enjoying the moment. Whether it’s laughter while building a snowman or cuddling close for a warm family hug, those natural interactions create photos that you’ll treasure for years to come.
