When it comes to capturing those precious moments with your newest family member, a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you're a parent eagerly awaiting the arrival of your bundle of joy or a photographer gearing up for a heartwarming session, here's a comprehensive guide to ensure a seamless and memorable experience.

Sleepy Baby is Ideal
Timing is everything, especially with newborns. For the sweetest and most tender moments, schedule your photo session within the first 14 days of your baby's life. Around day 8, babies start to stretch out, making it a bit challenging to capture those curled-up poses. If you've missed this window, don't worry – there are still tips and tricks to make the session magical!

What Should Baby Wear?
Have about three to four adorable outfits ready for your newborn's photo session. Keep them easily accessible to save time during the shoot. At the studio, basic wraps and bows will be available. Opt for simple, fitted rompers, onesies, sleep bags, swaddlers, and wraps. Neutrals and whites are timeless, but feel free to incorporate colors you love. Accessories like bows and headbands are encouraged, while crochet outfits, graphics, and oversized clothing are best avoided. *Try on outfits prior to your session. Outfits that are too large can make it very difficult.

Note: The focus is on capturing your baby's unique features, so keeping outfits simple enhances the essence of the photos.

What Should You Wear?
For parents, comfort is key. Choose outfits that make you feel good, celebrating the incredible journey of welcoming a new life. Dress in neutrals and add a touch of color for a cohesive family look. Minimize patterns and avoid bright or neon colors. Keep in mind how the outfits will complement each other when displayed on your walls. Want to run your outfit ideas by me? Happy to help! On the Day of Your Session
Preparing for the day of the session involves a few key steps:
  • Stimulate and Keep Baby Awake: Help your baby stay extra sleepy by stimulating them an hour before the session.
  • Feed Baby Right Before the Session: A full belly ensures a happy, sleepy baby.
  • Bring Extra Food: Babies may eat more during the session than usual, so be prepared to feed a little more than normal.
  • Bring a Pacifier: Sucking is soothing and can help settle the baby, even if it's not something used long-term.

Studio Temperature and Environment
I will ensure the studio is nice and warm with multiple heaters and warming blankets, as babies prefer a cozy setting. Feel free to bring drinks, snacks, and a change of clothes for yourself, as the studio can get toasty during the session!

Shhh... Let's Keep it Quiet
Maintain a calm environment by minimizing noise during the session. I may use a white noise app to soothe the baby. Once the siblings are done, there is a lobby with some toys they are welcome to go play with. I recommend bringing a helper to watch them during this time.

Good Things to Know
Siblings First: Family and sibling shots are prioritized at the beginning of the session. Consider having someone help with siblings, as sessions can last 1-3 hours.

Babies Need a Break: Don't stress if the baby gets fussy. Feeding breaks and diaper changes are expected. It’s hard work looking that cute!

Sit Back & Enjoy: Time is fleeting, so enjoy watching your little one's first photo session. Relax, and remember that a reshoot is always an option if needed. Babies can pick up your energy, so take some deep breaths and try not to worry. We got this.

Safety First: I will prioritize the safety of your baby. Communication about handling preferences is encouraged.

Prepare for the Long Haul: Sessions can take time, so eat a hearty meal beforehand, and feel free to bring drinks and snacks.

Note: Loosen baby's clothing and diapers upon arrival if you want naked photos to allow any marks to disappear.

With these tips in mind, you're well on your way to creating a beautiful collection of newborn memories.
